Around Aspen with Kate Holstein
Kate Holstein is an extraordinary photographer, who we are blessed to call an Aspen local and loves traveling to capture her exquisite images.
In a few words, how would friends and family describe you?Creative, adventurous, quick to laugh.
How did you get started in art & photography?I've always had a love for travel, and photography emerged from a desire to share the beautiful places and things I saw with my family and friends. My path to becoming an artist was very organic. It was not something I ever set out to do intentionally, it's just what happened along the way as I followed my passions. For this, I'm incredibly grateful.
What do you love most about your career?Photography is a field that has taught me how to live better and to create art out of my whole life. "To make living itself an art, that is the goal." I live by these words from Henry Miller. I believe things like work, art, and living are all deeply intertwined and inseparable. I love creating beauty each day, even if it's the smallest thing; taking a photo when the light is perfect, creating a simple flower arrangement, or cooking a beautiful meal. Being in a creative field means no day is ever the same and the opportunity to find and create beauty is omnipresent. That keeps me inspired and present.
How do you stay inspired? (see above :-))Nature is my source of inspiration first and foremost. I spend a lot of time outside and in beautiful natural places (Aspen of course!). I find inspiration in all forms of art and life; nature, food, design, people, fashion, travel... the list goes on!
Do you have any rituals or routines you swear by?The one ritual that never changes is my morning coffee-making ritual ;-) After that, I always try to get outside for a bike ride, hike, or skiing in the winter. Then I finish every day, just before bed, with yoga and meditation. These are like the bookends to my day. What happens in the middle is never the same so having the same start and finish helps to keep me balanced.
What do you love most about Aspen in the summer?I love the summer weather, the flowers everywhere, and how green everything is. The flow of summer with long days, picnics in the park or at the music tent, dining outside, and biking & hiking have made me love summer (almost) more than winter!
How do you stay well?Let thy food be thy medicine... Those are the words I live by to stay and feel well daily!
What are a few of your favorite experiences at O2?The yoga and pilates teachers at O2 are the best in town and to practice in such a beautiful space is something I really appreciate. O2 feels like a sanctuary with all its natural light and neutral color palette. It's the perfect space for wellness, be it yoga, shopping or spa!
I love Raquelle Allegra dresses (from O2 of course!) They are so light and comfortable yet stylish and elegant; perfect for summer in Aspen!
